Join Asrat Tefera’s Unbreakable Journey of Resilience

In the rugged hills of Ethiopia’s Selale Zone in Western Shewa, Asrat Tefera entered the world as the second of eight children. Life was a constant battle for his family—poverty shadowed their days, and heartbreak struck deepest when four siblings slipped away too soon. But Asrat’s story truly pivoted in the shadow of unimaginable loss: his mother’s passing. At just 17, in 2007, he packed his resolve and headed to the bustling chaos of Addis Ababa to join his elder sister.

City life hit like a storm. Asrat dove into grueling daily labor—hauling loads, toiling under the sun—for scraps of pay that barely fed his family back home. Yet his spirit never wavered; he dreamed of stability, of turning hardship into hope.

Fate smiled amid the struggle in 2008 when Asrat met Gelane Bena on the job. Sparks flew into a deep friendship, then love. They married in 2009, and soon welcomed their first son. Asrat stepped up as the family’s rock, the sole breadwinner for Gelane and their two boys: Fikru, now 16 and thriving in Grade 10, and Ermias, 11 and shining in Grade 5. Every long hour, every aching muscle fueled his mission—to give them the chances he never had, no matter the odds.

Then, in July 2023, disaster shattered their world. At work, Asrat plummeted from a ladder, his body battered by multiple injuries that stole his mobility. With scant resources and delayed care, complications mounted until he landed at Black Lion Hospital. Overnight, roles reversed: Gelane became the hero, scrubbing clothes from dawn till dusk, juggling home and hearth while tenderly nursing her husband. Her quiet courage ripples through their community, a beacon for all facing the unimaginable.

Hope dawned in November 2024. Our valued partner, Lelt Foundation, stepped in to fully cover Asrat’s surgery and medical bills. With Anchor’s tireless team by his side, the operation was a resounding success. Today, Asrat walks with steady steps, his eyes alight with possibility.

A Spark of Joy: Ermias’s Transformation
Amid the pain, young Ermias—Gelane and Asrat’s science-loving dreamer—faced his own darkness. The accident plunged him into depression, dimming his curiosity about the stars and seas. When he first stepped into Anchor’s Suki-Mariam Community Center, shadows clung to him. But our warm, dedicated staff wrapped him in support, coaxing out his playful spirit. Now? He’s a whirlwind of energy—chatting science with friends, experimenting with glee, and flashing smiles that light up the room. It’s proof that care can heal young hearts too.

Asrat’s resilience? It’s nothing short of legendary. Refusing to be defined by disability, he’s launched a humble business selling liquid soap (“largo”) and charcoal, clawing back independence for his family.
