Our projects

1. Suki-Mariam and Family Empowerment Project

Suki-Mariam Children and Family Empowerment Project is funded by the Lelt Foundation and being implemented by Anchor Ethiopia. The project targeted Suki-Mariam communities living in Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-city. The beneficiaries were carefully selected based on their dependability on risky plastic and other recycling materials’ collection business at Koshe, the largest dump area in the outskirt of Addis Ababa. The Project has three major components; Education, Nutrition, and Job Creation. Adult Literacy/Education and Digital Literacy/Computer Training Programs are also sub-activities of the organization.

Components of Suki-Mariam Project

  1. Education
  2. Nuitrition
  3. Job Creation
  4. Family Health
  5. Trauma Recovery

2. Digital Literacy/Computer Lab project

According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report of 2019, Ethiopia has ranked 137th in ICT adoption and 100th in digital skills among 141 countries. K-Flip identified seven major barriers that hinder citizens from developing or enhancing digital skills in Ethiopia. They are:

  1. Low literacy rate and poor knowledge of English.
  2. Low electricity coverage, limited internet access, and poor connectivity.
  3. Low affordability of ICT infrastructure (and digital devices).
  4. Lack of standardized digital training and skills assessment systems.
  5. Lack of demand-driven training programs.
  6. Lack of apprenticeship and internship opportunities in the digital field.
  7. Absence of specific regulations to encourage use of technology and digital content.

The lack of adequate digital skills in Ethiopia limits the adoption of digital initiatives in different sectors, preventing communities from accessing financial services and reaping the benefit of other private and government provisions. Digital Illiteracy is also a major cause for children’s incompetency at schools and unemployment.
Except the 7th barrier, Suki-Mariam Community Computer Lab Project is addressing all six barriers listed above. Anchor Ethiopia, in collaboration with the Lelt Foundation, has established a well-built Computer Lab to advance Digital Literacy among the Suki-Mariam Community. Suki-Mariam Computer Lab has 24 active desktops where each student works on his/her project. Lelt Foundation has graciously provided needed fund build a conducive Computer Lab setup and to install solar panels to solve the electric shortage and power outage problems with the intention of advancing renewable energy.
